We’re all used to people posting the results of their boob jobs and other cosmetic surgery procedures on social media. Many women love to discreetly show off their new breasts on a variety of social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and SnapChat. However, recently there has been a growing trend of plastic surgeons using Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook to broadcast their procedures to a wider, global audience.
Dr Michael Salzhauer, better known as ‘Dr Miami’ is perhaps the world’s most tech savvy plastic surgeon. The owner and chief surgeon at Bal Harbour Plastic Surgery, he’s a prolific social media user, with nearly 50,000 followers on Twitter and nearly 347,000 followers on Instagram. He’s been a trailblazer and has harnessed a unique way of using social media, posting photos of his sometimes graphic procedures across a range of social channels.
Speaking to the website Vice, Dr Salzhauer said: ‘This wouldn’t work for me if I was just opening up my practice. It just wouldn’t. But, of course it’s had an effect on the business. I was pretty busy anyway, but now I’m crazy busy. I’m booked until the end of next May. Every single day. It’s like, a thousand people, paid and signed up for surgery for the foreseeable future’.
Joining ‘Dr Miami’ is the renowned New York surgeon Dr Matthew Schulman. Speaking to Fox News, he said “I was always looking for a way to broadcast my surgeries and get it out there, and interact with patients and future patients. I started [using Snapchat] about a year ago. I think that’s what revolutionized things for me as a plastic surgeon… Any surgeries that I do I will broadcast.”
It has been a powerful marketing tool for him he says, with the majority of his consultations coming from social media followers.
Dr Schulman has nearly 3000 followers on Twitter and nearly 10,000 followers on Instagram and says he gets about 450,000 views every day. “I’d say about 80 to 85 percent of the people who come in for a consultation are active followers on Snapchat.” he said.
