Overview

Breast enlargement is the UK’s most popular cosmetic procedure. According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons over 11,000 procedures were carried in the UK in 2013. The procedure involves placing implants under the chest muscle or under the breast tissue to add size, shape or fullness.

Why have a breast enlargement?

Breast enlargements improve the physical appearance by enlarging or reshaping breasts to make them appear more symmetrical. Women who have had a mastectomy A boob job procedure can help women to restore fullness that has decreased with pregnancy or age. Generally most women who have the procedure found that it boosted their confidence and self esteem.

How much does it cost?

The average cost of having a boob job can vary usually from between £3,000 to £5,000. Prices typically vary from surgeon to surgeon depending on the procedure carried out, the type of breast implants used and the level of aftercare received. Many clinics offer finance packages that allow for different payment options to make boob jobs more affordable.

The Procedure

The surgery is popular among women of all ages and is relatively risk free. Usually the procedure takes about 60-90 minutes and is performed under general or local anesthetic. The entire surgery takes about an hour. During the procedure surgeons make an incision along the curve of your breast and an implant is inserted. Often the implant is placed between the chest muscle and breast tissue. The incision is then closed with dissolvable stitches. The actual position of the breast implant is discussed in advance with the surgeon and depends on the procedure carried out.

Types of Implants

There are usually three types of breast implants: saline, silicone, and polyurethane cohesive gel-filled implants. They can come in a range of shapes, sizes and shell textures. Implants can be inserted on top of the chest muscle or beneath it. The implants are designed to change the size and shape of your breasts.

The most common type of breast implant in the UK is the silicone implant. A silicone gel or silicone fluid is inserted in a shell, adding texture and shape to it.

Polyurethane implants are silicone implants with a polyurethane cushion, which makes it easier to anchor the implant in surrounding breast tissue. This reduces the chances of the implant moving.

Saline implants are composed of sterile salt water and are normally filled in through a valve after insertion.

How long do implants last?

Currently, implants last approximately 10 years, although they can last up to 25 years. Providing the silicone in the implants is medical grade, ruptures should not be a serious health issue. Scar tissue around the implant keeps any leakage contained. The risks of the implant rupturing increases beyond the 10-year mark, so surgeons advise that implants should be scanned from that period onwards.

Aftercare and recovery

It is quite common for patients to return home the same day or following day after a breast augmentation operation. The breast may feel numb or tingly after surgery. Patients are advised to do as little as possible during the first 10 days. They should avoid stretching or lifting their arms to avoid bleeding and opening of the stitches.

Recovery times vary between six to seven weeks, depending on the type procedure performed and any possible complications that can occur during the operation. By the seventh week most of the swelling has gone down and a much lower dose of pain killers is required.
